Welcome to My World!

Seen Through the Eyes of…

An extroverted introvert.

A hopeless romantic who still has hope.

An optimist who sees things as they could be and chooses to believe that’s what they are.

An adult child who lives on anime & cartoons and wishes desperately for the return of Invader Zim.

A dreamer who accepts “reality” but still trips over the foot planted in fairy tales and fantasies.

An armchair movie critic and backseat producer who thinks you haven’t really lived if you haven’t seen The Breakfast Club or House Party. And, yes, I AM judging you.

A book freak who still believes Sweet Valley High was the epitome of high school literature and The Chronicles of Narnia was the blueprint of life.

A sleepwalking contradiction who cries when I’m happy, sad, angry, or scared…and laughs at everything else.

A lover of all animals who prays for the eternal annihilation of all mosquitos, gnats, and cockroaches.

Someone who won’t be defined by social preconceptions or told how I should think, act, or talk.

Because it’s my world.  And I’ll live in it how I choose.

“It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it’s called Life.”
~ Terry Pratchett

Soooo…Who is V. A. Givens?

You don’t know me.

If we passed each other at a Starbucks (you: sipping a ginger ale Fizzio; me: scraping my straw against the bottom of a cup that once contained a Salted Caramel Mocha Frappucino) and locked eyes, you probably wouldn’t want to know me. And I could fill this intro blurb with twenty-thousand things about myself and you still wouldn’t really know me.

So instead of trying to squeeze everything about myself into a few long, boring paragraphs that you won’t read and I’ll forget I wrote, I’ll lead you to my stories. And every story will reveal a piece of me because it’s about all the things that happened in my life that made me…me.

But to give you a taste, I’ll sum it up:

I write.

I read.

Then I write some more and hope people will want to read what I wrote.

And one day, I’m gonna publish a bunch of books that even more people will read.

Nice to meet you.

Oh! And…ummmm…I also like alliteration. And ellipses. A lot…

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you from?

Everywhere. Nowhere. Somewhere??

Seriously, that’s the hardest question for a military brat to answer. Where we were born is never where we stay, and where we are is usually not where we came from. So the easiest answer to give is: I’m from here.

Does that answer the question?

What kind of stories do you write?

Just like there’s a story for every reader, there’s also a writer for every story. There’s a writer to inspire you; a writer to get you fired up and ready to go. One to open your eyes and one to get you angry. One to make you cry and one to make you think.

I want to be the writer who makes you smile as you reflect on a world that could be better and how to find your place in it.

How do you come up with your stories?

I don’t really “come up with them.” It’s more like they manifest in my thoughts as I’m falling asleep or taking a shower and refuse to go away.  They’re like internal movies playing over and over in my head until I’m forced to write them down or be engulfed in a raging cyclone of artistic madness.

Good times…

Which of your characters is most like you?

They all have a piece of me in them. Ricki is the hopeless romantic on the eternal lookout for her Mr. Right. Damian is the pragmatist whose rose-colored glass have been knocked sideways. Kai is my inner snark. Raelynn is my intellectual bully, slaying ignorance with snide comebacks and wicked side eye. So many sides of me, all spread through the characters of my stories.

What drives you to write?

My faith and a belief that God blessed me with a gift to share with others. No matter what I’m going through, if I can write a story or scribble down words of wisdom that will make someone smile or feel better for even one moment, I’ve served a purpose greater than myself. And that’s kinda cool.

Who's your favorite author?

Terry Pratchett. There are so many others I could give a shout out to, but Sir Pratchett is a freaking genius.

I love him.

What's your biggest advice for writers?

My biggest advice is also a writer’s biggest struggle: Write.

As long as you’re alive, life will do its best to get in the way, but if you can get even one word down on paper / computer / typewriter / napkin, that’s one word that didn’t exist until you put it there. And each word will build on top of the other to create a sentence. And that sentence will grow into a paragraph. And each paragraph will add up until your story, that thing that only YOU can tell, is finally told.

So keep writing.

Anything else?

Sometimes, that first idea ends up being the best one.

Don’t throw it away.
